In a 30-year international career in BP, I held senior level positions in strategy development and R&D and across sales, marketing, and downstream business management. Commercialisation was a recurrent theme from development through scale-up of both commodity and speciality products and this experience was shared with technologists as a facilitator of a biannual Practitioner Course.
Most recently I held the post of Director Venturing for BP Alternative Energy with responsibility for market scanning, investment and Board level representation in disruptive technology companies and venture funds with focus on renewable energy and bio-based products. Several of the ventures benefitted from in-depth knowledge of the licensing business model and how to sustain IP advantage. Throughout my career I’ve managed a diverse range of change projects including the turnaround of underperforming businesses, the rebranding and repositioning of a process technology to promote market leadership and cash release through increased working capital efficiency.
I continue to work as an adviser to BP and also in a number of non-executive positions with start-ups in the sustainability sector (Intelligent Growth Solutions) and other organisations including the National Non-Food Crop Centre (NNFCC), and Chainge Supply Chain Consulting. Most recently I have been supporting Quantiply and their start-ups ups within the Innovate UK energy cohort before becoming a member of the FIN Advisory Committee, focused on sourcing and assessing new opportunities within the sustainability sector.
